what’s worth taking; all of us tired, some of us hurting, displayed at BEST PRACTICE in San Diego.
Composed of two wooden tower-like structures with a chain of ceramic bells hovering between them, this work ruminates on experiences of longing for home. Recalling displacement, precarity, and Asian diasporic memory, the arranged objects contemplate familial belongings and the physical/emotional weight of the goods people take with them during displacement. Utilizing singular and collaborative artworks, I seek places of refuge through objects that hold memory, materials that preserve touch, and references to ever-changing landscapes. This installation connects these points of belonging to trace a transitory narrative.

a grain of rice embedded in my chest (iteration ii), displayed at BEST PRACTICE in San Diego.
As my installation was meant to be composed of modular parts that could be rearranged and displayed again in various new, altar-like arrangements, it took a more sculpture-like manifestation in this group show. This version allowed for candles to burn continuously, allowing the dripping wax to show the passing of time and the continuity of offering and honoring. The modular aspect of this work is based on the belief that an altar can be created at any location at any time; we see this all over the world, from home altars to roadside altars.
